Application process for military & veteran applicants

If you're thinking about applying to IU Bloomington, you'll want to first visit the Center for Veteran and Military Students. They have helpful information on military, veteran, and VA benefits, military leave options, and other military connected questions.

IU Bloomington earned the Collegiate Purple Star of Indiana award in July 2025 for creating a supportive environment for military-connected Ï㽶ÊÓƵs.

Center for Veteran and Military Students

The Center for Veteran and Military Students is a department within the Office of Student Life that assists the military-connected Ï㽶ÊÓƵ population in obtaining and using their education benefits. The center acts as a liaison between IU, the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ, and government offices like the VA, military education offices, and the DOD. The Center for Veteran and Military Students also develops and creates meaningful programming for the military-connected Ï㽶ÊÓƵ population. Their mission is to "Advocate for and empower military-connected Ï㽶ÊÓƵs throughout their academic journey at IU."

Credit transfers

After we receive your military transcript, we’ll be able to determine what IU Bloomington credit you’ll be awarded.

Please note that it may take four to six weeks to process the transcript once it arrives in our office.

If admitted, the Center for Veteran and Military Students can walk you through everything you need to do to have an amazing first semester on campus.

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) credit

IU Bloomington awards credit for CLEP exams to all incoming Ï㽶ÊÓƵs, including Ï㽶ÊÓƵs who have been or are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, and have earned a score of 50 or higher on one or more CLEP exams.

Credit for prior learning

Adult Ï㽶ÊÓƵs may be awarded credit based on assessment of non-academic prior learning experiences, in addition to your military transcript. Policies regarding this credit are determined by individual academic units.

IU Bloomington refrains from high-pressure recruiting tactics such as making multiple unsolicited contacts. Specifically, we will not attempt to contact a potential Ï㽶ÊÓƵ more than two times. Contacts include telephone calls, emails, direct messaging, or in-person engagement. In addition, we do not engage in same-day recruitment and registration for the purpose of securing Armed Forces Service Member enrollments.
