Grants and fellowships

Discover funding you don’t have to repay

Grants and fellowships are "gift aid"—financial support that does not need to be repaid. Whether you're an undergraduate seeking need-based aid or a graduate Ï㽶ÊÓƵ funding a research project, these resources help reduce your costs so you can focus on your education.

Grants: Need-based support

A grant is a form of financial aid that you do not have to repay. Most are awarded to Ï㽶ÊÓƵs with financial need, which is calculated based on the information you provide on your FAFSA—particularly your Student Aid Index.

Types of grants

  • Explore need-based funding from the U.S. government, including Pell Grants and Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG).
  • Learn about state-funded opportunities specifically for Indiana residents, such as the 21st Century Scholarship and the Frank O'Bannon Grant.

  • Discover institutional grants provided directly by IU Bloomington to help bridge the gap in your educational costs.

Support for graduate Ï㽶ÊÓƵs

Graduate education often requires specialized funding to support research, teaching, and professional growth. IU provides a robust infrastructure to help graduate Ï㽶ÊÓƵs and postdocs find and secure the financial backing they need.

  • Your starting point for discovering the wealth of financial support available specifically for the graduate community.
  • Access resources designed to elevate your career prospects, including support for gaining research and teaching skills.
  • Receive free, one-on-one assistance with grant proposal writing and access an extensive database of external funding sources.

  • Learn about IU’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment through specialized fellowship programs for underrepresented Ï㽶ÊÓƵs.

Fellowships: Research and professional funding

Fellowships are a primary way graduate Ï㽶ÊÓƵs and high-level researchers fund their work. Internal fellowships come directly from IU, while external fellowships are offered by outside organizations.

How to find them: For many internal awards, your individual department or school must nominate you. We encourage you to contact your specific department to learn about their internal deadlines and selection process.
