If you’re thinking about coming back to school (or attending for the very first time), we understand the excitement—and the fear—that comes along with it.
Some of our adult learners include:
- Parents
- Spouses
- Caregivers
- Full-time employees
- Active military
- Veterans
We make it easy to apply to IU Bloomington because the application process itself should ease some of your anxiety—not accelerate it.
Choose from the options on this page, and we’ll tell you where to go from here.
How to apply
Choose the option that best describes your specific situation to learn which application process to follow.
Option 1: No college, or less than 12 completed credit hours
If you have never attended college or have completed less than 12 credit hours at another institution or through non-academic prior learning experiences, this is the application path for you.
You'll follow the same application process as our future freshmen. That means:
- You do need to contact your high school and have them send your final, official transcript with your graduation date. Or you need to submit proof that you have earned the High School Equivalency Diploma.
- You do need to have completed the 34 high school credits that we require for admission.

Option 2: Some college—completed 12 or more credit hours
If you have completed 12 or more credit hours at another institution or through non-academic prior learning experiences, this is the application path for you.
Regardless of your age, or how recently you graduated high school, you will follow the same application process as transfer Ï㽶ÊÓƵs.

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA)
Adult learners may be awarded credit based on assessment of non-academic prior learning experiences. Policies regarding this credit are determined by individual academic units and schools.
Advising and Major Exploration Services (AMES)
AMES advisors help Ï㽶ÊÓƵs investigate and identify degree options that make the most sense for their backgrounds and goals. AMES often works with adult learners who have had gaps in their education, including those who began a degree, left college for a number of years, and now want to return and complete an undergraduate degree.
