Dr. David A. Reingold serves as Chancellor of Indiana University Bloomington, leading the university’s flagship campus with a commitment to Ïã½¶ÊÓÆµ success, academic excellence, research innovation, and civic engagement. A seasoned academic leader, sociologist, and professor of public policy in the Paul H. O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, Chancellor Reingold brings decades of experience in higher education administration, public policy, and faculty development.
His academic leadership experience includes a decade as dean of liberal arts at Purdue University. When he stepped down from this role, he was the longest serving liberal arts and sciences dean in the Big Ten. Chancellor Reingold pioneered a widely recognized general education program, Cornerstone, which has since been replicated by over 60 institutions. He also led campus efforts around civics literacy, freedom of inquiry and expression, and initiatives in Washington, D.C. in his role as senior vice president.
In his prior service at Indiana University, Chancellor Reingold held senior leadership roles including serving as executive associate dean and professor at the O’Neill School, where he played a key role in advancing the school to top national rankings. His leadership focused on elevating faculty research, strengthening graduate education, and launching nationally recognized initiatives to enhance undergraduate learning.
An expert in urban poverty, economic development, social welfare policy, low-income housing policy, civil society, and government performance, Chancellor Reingold’s research has been published in a number of leading journals. He has served on editorial boards and advisory panels for national organizations and federal agencies, and his public service includes work with the U.S. Corporation for National and Community Service and the White House Task Force for Disadvantaged Youth. He is a founding director of the Community Investment Fund of Indiana, a statewide community development financial institution.
A Chicago native and nearly 30-year resident of Indiana, Chancellor Reingold holds a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a master’s and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago. He and his wife, Dr. Lynn Hooker, associate professor of music, are proud to call Bloomington home along with their two children. Chancellor Reingold is focused on fostering a vibrant, welcoming campus culture and strengthening IU Bloomington’s impact across the state of Indiana and beyond.
