Steps to enroll
Defer admission or cancel your application
Deferring your admission
If you’ve been admitted to IU Bloomington but aren’t ready to start, you may be able to defer your entry for up to one year. This allows you to delay your start date without losing your place in the incoming class.
Eligibility and requirements
- Timeframe:
- First-year beginning Ï㽶ÊÓƵs: You can defer entry for up to one year from the term to which they originally applied; after one year has passed, you’ll need to reapply.
- Transfer Ï㽶ÊÓƵs: You can defer your entry for up to one term from the term to which you originally applied. After one term has passed, you will need to reapply.
- Graduate deferral: Admission deferral requests are determined by individual programs. You will need to submit a formal request to the program office prior to the response deadline in your admission letter.
- Final transcripts:
- First-year Ï㽶ÊÓƵs: If you have been offered admission and choose to defer, you must still send us your final official high school transcript, which must include your date of graduation.
- Transfer Ï㽶ÊÓƵs: If you have been offered admission and choose to defer, you must still send your final college transcripts. If you take courses at another postsecondary institution after deferring admission to IU Bloomington, you are required to submit new transcripts and your application may be reviewed again based on any new academic information.
- Test scores: If you selected to have your SAT and/or ACT test scores considered as a part of your admissions review and you self-reported your scores on your application, you will need to send your official test scores to IU Bloomington, which should be sent directly from the testing agencies and must match or exceed the scores you self-reported.
- Academic review: Your application may be re-reviewed based on any new academic information. These materials must be submitted by the November 1 early action (non-binding) deadline.
- Transfer credit limit: First-year Ï㽶ÊÓƵs who complete 12 or more credit hours at another institution during their deferment year must reapply to IU Bloomington as a transfer Ï㽶ÊÓƵ.
- Limited capacity programs: Please note that this opportunity to defer your admission to a future term applies to your admission to Indiana University Bloomington and not admission to a specific academic program. Your application will be reviewed with consideration for your academic profile and capacity within your chosen academic program. Admission to limited-capacity programs is not guaranteed.
- Application review pause: If your application is in progress at the time your defer request is received, meaning you have submitted your application and some or all of your supplemental materials, but you have not yet received a response, the review of your application will be paused until the information referenced above has been received. This information includes your final, official high school transcript, which must include your date of graduation, and if you requested to have test scores considered, official test scores that match or exceed those self-reported at the time of application.
How to defer
Domestic freshman and transfer Ï㽶ÊÓƵs should complete the online deferral form at least two weeks before the start of their original term.
- Log in to the online deferral form.
- Select "Entry Term."
- Provide the requested deferral information.
Important: Manage your enrollment steps
If you have already begun the enrollment process, submitting a deferral form does not automatically cancel other contracts. To avoid fees or academic penalties, you must manually complete the following:
- Cancel housing: You must separately.
- Withdraw from classes: If you have already registered for courses, you must from all classes.
